Hij wordt gestimuleerd te gaan fotograferen door zijn docenten, maar komt ook in contact met kunstenaars zoals Frans en Johan Jacobs, Marinus Dillen, Marinus Bies en Marcel von Sijben. Op advies van Adriaan Boer van het fotoblad Focus studeert hij in 1930 en 1931 aan de Bayerische Staatslehranstalt für Lichtbildwesen in München bij Hanna Seewald. In 1932 begint hij aan de Emmasingel te Eindhoven een fotoatelier met name voor portretfotografie.<br /> <br /> In 1935 trouwt hij met Nanna (Johanna Maria Huberta) Cuppens (1908-2000) en uit het huwelijk worden tien kinderen geboren, onder wie fotohistoricus Jan, architect Gerrit en beeldhouwer Joep. Hij verzorgt causerieën over fotografie en is technisch adviseur van de Eindhovensche Fotografen Vereniging De Amateur, de latere Fotokring Eindhoven. Bij het bombardement op 6 december 1942 wordt zijn fotoatelier vernield. Daarna betrekt hij een pand aan de Hoogstraat en later aan de Laagstraat in Eindhoven.<br /> <br /> Naast de technische kwaliteit van zijn foto’s krijgt hij vooral door zijn eigenzinnige visie van fotograferen bekendheid.<br /> <br /> In de publicaties: De mensch in de fotografie. Leerboek voor portretfotografie (1946) en: Mens en Camera (1950), geeft hij inzicht in zijn opvattingen. De vele fotoboeken – zo’n 60 in getal – hebben enorm aan zijn reputatie bijgedragen, ook buiten Brabant.<br /> <br /> Zijn vroege werk is in de traditie van het picturalisme met een sterke clair-obscur-werking, zijn werk eind jaren 1950 wordt non-figuratiever en abstracter met aandacht voor ritme en fotosequenties. Gestimuleerd door zijn heeroom norbertijn Servatius Coppens begint hij met het verzamelen van kerkelijke kunst. Door musicus Dick Raaijmakers raakt hij omstreeks 1960 in de ban van het verzamelen van etnoplastieken. Zijn collectie heeft hij in het fotoboek Negerplastiek.
